Heroes and Generals is a game that looks like it would be a very good idea. If you don’t know what it is, you should check it out here.
All that said the developers decided to go with a flash-based launcher (which was a completely awful idea). My computer (which runs Diablo III on max settings at 120fps just fine …) can barely handle their flash-based launcher (running it at ~3fps and 15fps when it’s running well).
As if that wasn’t bad enough, after waiting almost a full hour to get into a match, the main game (which isn’t flash) was a disaster. It loads in a screen where you select what soldier you’d like to be, this screen also runs at 3fps (why?), and when I get passed that I’m finally in the game. The first thing I noticed is that the sound immediately cut out and wasn’t working, oh well. The next thing I noticed is anywhere I looked at for the first time dropped to ~1fps and everything else was about 20fps. Lowest or max settings didn’t seem to change the game performance at all. It probably didn’t help that their flash launcher (still running in the background) was consuming an entire core and a little bit more.
If all that wasn’t bad enough, the game ended up freezing and after a 1 hour wait period I got to play for about 2mins and then it was back to the queue.
If this game stands any hope of being successful they’re going to have to ditch the flash launcher, fire who’s idea it was to use a flash launcher (because come on, what kind of idiot … nvm), and optimize their non-flash potions. The main game check if you have dx9, dx10, then dx11, it will load the newest one. From what I can tell you can’t select which version of DirectX it uses so there’s no way to optimize in that regard. Seeing how it would fare in OpenGL would be nice, it would also be nice if the game loaded properly instead of trying to load everything after the match begins with seemingly no end.
Well, this game was a complete waste of time …
